| History I
graduated from University of Aberdeen (BSc) with honors
in 1991.
After four years solidly devoted to books, I took up cycling
to get in shape. By applying my scientific mind to training
and racing I steadily moved up the ranks turning Pro in
1994. That year I raced on the British National Team at
the World Cross Country Championships, placing 25th. Joe
Friel was my coach. I hired him as we were living in the
same town. I didn't know at the time he was one of the
top coaches in the country - he is so down to earth. Joe
was a big boost to my race results and sparked the love
of coaching inside me. |
Racing During my racing career
in the 90's I won two Scottish National Cross Country Championship titles,
had team 24-hour racing wins and numerous podium appearances.
Along the way the science of coaching began to interest me
as much as racing. Under the guidance of Joe Friel I refined
my coaching techniques and weaned out of racing and into
full time coaching. |
In
2004, after
a five year break from racing I got the itch to toe the
line again and posted my "come-back" training
journal online. Getting back into race shape after
having two children is a
gradual and excruciatingly slow process. I had to be patient! In 2004 my peak
race was the US National 100 mile Mountain Bike Championships
in July. I won, set a 100 mile mountain bike PR and a course
record in 9 hours and 3 minutes. In 2005 armed with more
knowledge about the course and a few more miles in my legs I
broke that record by 27 minutes, finishing in 8:36, the first
woman ever to ride the Epic course under 9 hours -
an accomplishment I am proud
of and a sweet moment for me to remember. In 2006 I started the year off on fire by winning the
24-hours in the Old Pueblo solo mountain bike race with 240
miles and followed it up winning Trans Rockies and 24
hours of Moab. In 2006 and 2007 I raced for the pro
Team HealthFX and
posted a blog
on their site.
Personal
Philosophy I have now been coaching
endurance athletes for 14 years. I am certified USA Cycling Elite
level coach. I strongly believe in continuing
my coaching education and holding sport specific
certifications. I routinely attend conferences and
clinics to further myself as a coach. I also race. Racing
myself is one of the many ways I learn in detail what it takes
to be a fast racer.
LW
Coaching Athletes Performances
Many of my athletes have accomplished amazing things over
the years making it very fun to be their coach. 2005
saw my athletes on the podium at US National 24-hour
solo Mountain Bike
Championships, Trans Rockies, Xterra and Norba National
Championship series events. In 2005 I completed my first
Ironman, read my IM race report here
and set a personal best in a 100 mile
mountain bike race in July of 8:36 and did my first
24-hour solo mountain bike race. Read some LW
Coaching athlete race reports and testimonials
here.
2007 was another banner year with National Championship
titles, a state championship title, 24 hour solo podiums and
stage race finished for LW Coaching athletes.
Family
I live in St George, Utah. Emma is 5yrs and Wesley 8yrs. They
kept everybody amused in the aid stations at the Brian Head Epic100 while
waiting for me to ride by. |
