a Cyclo-cross Mount-Dismount Learning and practicing
fluid mounts and dismounts without stopping is an advanced
skill mountain bikers can learn to
improve their performances. It is a paramount
skill needed in order to flow through a course with several
hike-a-bike sections. It is much faster to hop on your
bike from a run, than decelerating to a full stop, mounting
your bike and then accelerating back up to speed. Use

Teaching Mountain Bike Skills
There are two types of mountain
bikers: those who find out how fast they can go by riding faster
than their skills allow, crashing and then going a little slower
the next time, and those who tentatively ride a little faster
each ride until they reach the limit of their comfort zone. As a
coach teaching skills you will be working almost exclusively
with the second group as the first group are out there teaching

Mountain Bike Skilz 101 With a few
easily learned bike handling skills, adventuring into the dirt
will be more fun and you will feel more in control. Basic skills
are teachable and easy to learn. Balance is one of the primary
skills. Learning the basics of where you have your weight
distributed on the bike and the effects it has on your balance
is one of the first things I teach beginners. This is the

OTB! Over The Bars One of a beginners
most feared events on (or rather off) the bike is an unplanned
trip over the handlebars. Two things cause this. First is the
front wheel suddenly stopping or slowing too quickly, and second
is poor weight balance. Reasons for the front wheel stopping too
quickly include pulling too hard on the front brake and putting
the front wheel in a hole or dip it cannot easily roll out
of. Both are relatively easy to avoid with a little
attention. Adjusting weight balance to avoid a trip over the
bars is a skill which can be mastered with a little practice.
